Friendswood Mustangs vs. Channelview Falcons. Saturday, September 17, 2011

What can I say about a game where we score 42 points and still lost? I guess the best way to describe it would be to say that neither defense was up for the challenge. I still don't know who to bribe to get an updated roster. There are some boys who are playing varsity who are not on the original roster. For those boys, I  have to use their jersey numbers when I tweet to give them the props they deserve.
Let's start with the good news. Jordan Wood is still improving as quarterback, without losing his skills as a safety or receiver. Gunner Holle is continuing to improve as a receiver. JJ is still a super hero and Zakk Rosales proved that he is capable of running the ball when JJ needs to catch his breath. Trevor Stevens is playing well and so are Logan Varner, Caleb Taube, Joshua Camarillo, and Matt Wallace. Taube & Camarillo both are making a name for themselves on defense. They are able to run down most of the long passes and stop receivers (although they did this better against Stratford than they did against Channelview.)
Now for the bad news. We continue to rack up too many penalties, some for things they should no better than to do. Our offensive line didn't give Jordan Wood much time, and when he did have time, his best option was to run the ball (which he does rather well). For the most part, our defense in ineffective (they gave up 62 points! In one game!). The Channelview receivers were usually wide open. The closest defender was often 5 or more steps away. The defense is still susceptible to the hail Mary pass (something we've always struggled with).
Our team has been plagued with injuries this season. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first game in which no one sustained an injury preventing him from playing in future games. And, 3 of our injured players return to the field this week.
This next game will be at home against the Galveston Ball Tornadoes (0-4) on Friday, September 23, 2011. Kick off will be at 7pm. The pre-game dinner will be hosted by the FHS choir.
