I did a little research this evening and found a couple of interesting statistics.
First, the highest scoring high school football game in Texas was 102 - 0 When Raymondville played Edcouch-Elsa.
The highest scoreing high school football game in history was in 1926 when Haven High School defeated Sylvia 256 - 0.
The challenge - put Friendswood in the record books for the highest scoring high school football game. In Texas, or in the country.

Friday Night Football - Channelview Falcons vs. Friendswood Mustangs
Tonight our Friendswood Mustangs hosted the Channelview Falcons for the first game in the newly renovated Henry Winston Stadium. Let's start with the stadium.
Before the game was the pregame dinner hosted by the Wranglerettes. My oldest daughter danced at that dinner, so we were there very early and got a great parking space.
The new stadium is much larger than the old one, which is a good thing. But from what I can see, it's just a larger version of what we already had. I noticed a few problems that should be easily fixed. First, I was down near the spirit store during the National Anthem. The band was not nearly loud enough. I couldn't hear them. I would have never known that the National Anthem was playing if I hadn't heard someone beside me say it. The second problem. An area that used to be open seating/general admission was sold this year as season tickets. And not all the seats sold. So, there were people sitting there thinking it was general admission only to have to move. And to top it off, the people working the stadium were misinformed about which seats were reserved and which ones weren't. Please, don't think I don't like the stadium. I really do. Just a few kinks that need to be worked out.
And then, there was the pregame dinner. I do not fault the Wranglerettes in any way shape or form. But Chick-Fil-A dropped the ball. They were late delivering the food. Then ran out, and the driver with the second delivery driver got lost. I was no where near the last one in line, and still had to eat without tasting my food.
And now, on to the game. The final score did not reveal everything that happened during the game.
I missed the coin toss, so I don't know who won, but I do know that Friendswood received the ball at kick off. Maetzold and our offense marched right down the field to to end zone. After that first score, which came 2 minutes 34 seconds into the game. Channelview called for a fair catch on the 26 yard line, and 4 plays later punted the ball. Kennemer caught the ball on the 40. Once again, Maetzold's offense marched to the endzone. 4 minutes and 16 seconds later Johnson found the goal line to bring the score to 0-14. The first quarter ended with a score of Channelview 0 - Friendswood 14.
In the first 20 seconds of the second quarter, Friendswood scored twice. The first time when Maetzold passed the ball to Battle 5 seconds into the quarter. The second score came on an interception by Lewis who ran the ball into the blue grass. The brought the score to Channelview 0 - Friendswood 28. Three minutes later, Maetzold passed the ball to Battle for another Friendswood score. New score Channelview 0 - Friendswood 35. After this touchdown, Channelview was able to get their first 1st down of the night. Channelview ended up having to punt again and I saw something happen that I have only seen once before in the 30+ years I've been watching high school football - the punt was blocked! This time, Friendswood allows our back up quarterback to play, and he finds the end zone! The extra point kick was wide left, so the score was Channelview 0 - Friendswood 41. When our defense took the field, our back up QB played on defense. But then, Channelview found their way onto the scoreboard. New score, Channelview 6 - Friendswood 41. Friendswood answers back with 17 seconds left in the half as Battle gets around the Channelview defense to score again. To end the second half, the score was Channelview 6 - Friendswood 48.
Tonight was the annual Daddy Daughter Dance for the Wranglerettes. It was great to see them all dancing together. If I ever figure out how to do it, I will post the video.
Our second string, and some third string played the entire second half. And yet, still we were able to play with Channelview. Although I will admit that Channelviewhad an easier time. The sophomore WR/DB known as Jordon Wood played most of the second half. And even led the Mustangs into the end zone. One thing our players learned on the field tonight is that if you bend the rules, the refs will see it, and the team will be punished. The Mustangs suffered penalties for a false start, personal foul, and unnecessary roughness. I was very disappointed in our team for the personal foul and the unnecessary roughness. A team from Friendswood should not play that way. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the score was Channelview was 13 - Friendswood 48.
The 4th quarter landed Friendswood penalties for face mask, false start, and off sides. And both teams found the end zones again. Tyler Dement also put points on the board by kicking a 41 yard field goal! The final score was Channelview 20 - Friendswood 58. The game ended when Wood took a knee. Something else happening at the end of the game, which put a smile on my face, the Falcon band and the Mustang band battled back and forth playing the same song. Who could play it better/louder. I wonder if they're still there playing that song.
This moves Friendswood to 4-0 to finish the nondistrict games. Next week, the Mustangs will travel to the island to take on the Galveston Ball High School Tors and open district play. I will not be able to make this game. Instead I will be at my high school's (Dickinson) homecoming. I will be at the following game to watch the Mustangs take on the Pearland Dawson Eagles.
Tonight was a great opportunity for our younger, less experienced players to get some playing time and see where they need to improve.
I am looking forward to the next home game.
On a very sad night, I learned through twitter that the quarterback from West Orange -Stark (who we played 2 weeks ago), was taken off the field on a stretcher after an apparent seizure on the sidelines in their game against Jasper. Later in the evening, I learned the evening, I learned that the player had past away. Here is a link to the article about this player. http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/high-school/WO-S_quarterback_taken_off_of_field_by_stretcher.html?c=y&page=1#storytop

Friday night football - Friendswood Mustangs vvs. Stratford Spartans
Admittedly, I didn't pay as much attention to this week's game as I normally do. I had friends with me, a group of 6th grade girls talking to me, and I was watching an 8th grade boy attempt to flirt.
After losing 3 key players to injuries last week alone, I was really worried about how our defense would play. The first 18 minutes of playing time seemed to show that our defense wasn't ready. Stratford seemed to find plenty of holes to run through. But when the Spartans got into the end zone for the second time, it was their last.
I have to say, the tackling tonight was probably the best I have ever seen the Friendswood Mustangs tackle. I didn't see a single arm tackle (if one happened while I had my head turned, please don't tell me. Please let me believe that they didn't try any arm tackles). Sure, there were still a few holes, a few missed assignments, and a few lucky passes, but overall, our defense did a great job of tackling tonight.
Our offense seemed to make some adjustments during the game as well. Those "adjustments" were probably made in the locker room during half time. During the second half, our offense looked more like the Friendswood Mustangs than they did in the first half.
I think everyone knew going into this game that it wasn't going to be a walk in the park. And it wasn't. Lots of punting happened tonight. But our Mustangs showed that they can overcome adversity and continue to play well. Of course, I don't want to continue to test that theory. I think we've had plenty of "adversity" for this season. Now, we just need to get everyone healthy and back into playing pads and back on the field.
Rumor has it that next week, we'll start getting injured players back. And huge props go out to Will Fitzpatrick for playing with a knee brace tonight after last week's injury.
Next week will be our first game in the newly renovated Henry Winston Stadium We're told that the pressbox may not be ready, but the PA system and the score board will be working, they may just be controlled from somewhere other than the pressbox. I think all the fans are looking forward to getting back into our stadium.
If you see any of our coaches around town, be sure to tell them what a great job they are doing with the team.

West Orange Stark Mustangs vs. Friendswood Mustangs
This was supposed to be our home opener in our newly renovated stadium. Instead, we had to "borrow" (with compensation) Deer Park's Clyde Abshier Stadium. We played West Orange Stark. I'm sure WOS was grateful for the change in venue. Deer Park is closer to Orange than Friendswood.
I'd read several predictions about this game, ranging from "Expect a close game" to "This should be a blow out for Friendswood." WOS is a 3A school, but a football power house in 3A. Both sports reports for the Galveston County Daily News predicted Friendswood would win by quiet a large margin (http://galvestondailynews.com/story/173594 ). I think some of the players made have read that article.
West Orange Stark came ready to play, and ready to win. They had a few tricks up their sleeve and waited to see which would work the best.
On our first possession, we had to punt. Not a good showing - Maetzold was sacked the first time he touched the ball. Did someone miss an assignment?
After our first defensive play, there was a Friendswood Mustang who didn't get up. It turned out to be Will Fitzpatrick who left the game. He never returned. It was tweeted that he was icing his knee. At this point, I have no other news on him.
WOS was given a penalty for a personal foul and play resumed after Fitzpatrick was helped off the field.
After our second defensive play, there was a Friendswood Mustang who didn't get up. This time it was R. Brown. Brown also had to be helped off the field and never returned. Again, three was a tweet later in the game that he was icing his knee, and I have no other news on him.
I began to wonder if this was West Orange Stark's game plan - take out our starters so they wouldn't have to work as hard. I've heard of teams doing that, but I never imagined it would happen to us because we don't play like that.
That was the last injury - for a while at least.
Halfway through the first quarter, Friendswood was the first to get on the board. Jonathon Johnson ran the ball in for a touch down. With 7:29 left in the 1st quarter, the score was WSO 0 -FWD 7
Once WOS gets their hands on the ball, they marched right on down the field to score. They went for the 2 point conversion and got it. New score WSO 8 FWD 7.
After they kick off, I realize why they went for the 2. Their place kicker can't get the ball in the air.
At the end of the 1st quarter, the score is 8-7, Maetzold had been sacked once and intercepted once.
It doesn't take WOS long after the second quarter began to get into the end zone again. This time, they did not get the 2 point conversion. So the score goes to 14 - 7.
We drive down the field, sure that we're going to score. . . . and Maetzold over throws his receiver, who was in the end zone. They again. This time Maetzold has JJ in his sights, they seem lined up for the perfect play to even the score, but instead Maetzold is picked off. This play began the penalties against us. This one was for a late hit. At this point I posted on twitter and facebook, "Come on boys! I KNOW the coaches taught you better than that!"
We earn another penalty (offsides) before WOS scores again. Again they go for the 2 point conversion, this time they are denied when Kennemer intercepts the ball in the end zone! About half way through the 2nd quarter and the score is WOS 20 - FWD 7.
7 plays and 66 yards later, after using a no huddle offense, JJ falls into the end zone (stumbles is more like it) for a Friendswood touch down. The extra point is good. WOS 20 - FWD 14 with 5 minutes left in the half.
WOS fumbles right after the kick off, but we can't capitalize on it and have to punt it away.
Maetzold is sacked 2 more times before the end of the quarter. But, at least this week the ref were calling pass interference. They were actually watching for it. WOS was called several times for this penalty. Just before the end of the half, Canada was thrown out of bounds and tackled so hard that his helmet came off. He had to leave the game for a bit because his helmet was actually broken. It was repaired or replaced during half time.
Friendswood scored early in the 3rd quarter, bringing the score to 20 - 21!
During the 3rd quarter, WOS scored again after their offensive line was able to give their quarterback all the time in the world to make a decision, then execute. New score 28 - 21
The score remains the same through the rest of the quarter. When the 4th quarter begins, we begin to march down the field, 2 steps forward, then a step or two backward. Maetzold is sacked, again. Making this number 5 for the night. The next two plays result in two more injuries, one for each team. Neither appears to be serious. 2 plays later (maybe 3) instead of the trainers running to help an injured player, they are running to an official who appears to be unconscious, face down on the field. After a few tense minutes, the official gets up and begins to walk around under his own power. Somehow, he had managed to get himself knocked out.
Our drive looked great, but we were unable to get into the end zone. The injuries took our rhythm away from us. Hardy made a 37 (27?) yard field goal attempt, but the kick was wide (actually, it was straight when it should have gone to the right). So, WOS got the ball back.
Again, we were unable to stop their run, and they marched right on down into the end zone. New score, 34 - 28 with 1:58 left in the game.
This time, we march right on down the field and score (thanks to a few penalties against WOS). New score 35 - 34 with 30 seconds left in the game.
They made a serious run, but ran out of time. The final score was West Orange Stark 34 - Friendswood 35.
So, once again we get one in the win column. But, isn't it all we hoped it would be. The people who warned that West Orange Stark was fast did not lie. What they didn't say was the the WOS Mustangs play dirty. Not only were the players ill behaved, but even one of the coaches had to be drug back after the game when he went charging across the field toward the officials. Thankfully, some of his staff and players were able to control him before the police who were on the field had to get involved and before anyone got hurt.
I'm curious if the game would have been the blow out it was supposed to be had 2 defensive starters not been hurt so early in the game.
Our offense looked good most of the time, and Maetzold had plenty of time to throw the ball, most of the time. But, there were some mistakes in his protection and I'm sure he'll be sore tomorrow because of it. But, another good thing I can say about Maetzold, he's not afraid to take a hit. I've seen plenty of other quarterbacks take a dive, rather than be sacked or tackled. If you're going to take him down, be prepared to work for it.
Our defense still has work to do. For the last 2 years, at least, our boys have had a problem missing tackles that shouldn't be missed. I wonder if our boys play touch football during practice? They are doing alot of arm tackling that is ineffective on Friday nights.
Something else I've noticed, and I'm sure others have as well, is that our entire team seem to be good sportsman. It seems that the character education that FISD starts in kindergarten and teaches all the way through high school is effective. It's nice to see our boys helping up the players from both teams after a play. It's good to see that our team doesn't take the cheap shots that so many other teams take. It gives me hope for future generations to see our team play to win, and still play with respect. Even when we lose, rather than saying "We were robbed" or it wasn't fair, our team loses with good grace and complements the other team on a game well played. See that makes me proud to live in Friendswood.
So, for next week's game . . . We will play Statford at Tully Stadium. GOOOOOO MUSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGS!!
