Friday Night Football - Channelview Falcons vs. Friendswood Mustangs

Tonight our Friendswood Mustangs hosted the Channelview Falcons for the first game in the newly renovated Henry Winston Stadium. Let's start with the stadium.
Before the game was the pregame dinner hosted by the Wranglerettes.  My oldest daughter danced at that dinner, so we were there very early and got a great parking space.
The new stadium is much larger than the old one, which is a good thing.  But from what I can see, it's just a larger version of what we already had.  I noticed a few problems that should be easily fixed.  First, I was down near the spirit store during the National Anthem.  The band was not nearly loud enough.  I couldn't hear them.  I would have never known that the National Anthem was playing if I hadn't heard someone beside me say it.  The second problem.  An area that used to be open seating/general admission was sold this year as season tickets.  And not all the seats sold.  So, there were people sitting there thinking it was general admission only to have to move.   And to top it off, the people working the stadium were misinformed about which seats were reserved and which ones weren't.  Please, don't think I don't like the stadium.  I really do.  Just a few kinks that need to be worked out.
And then, there was the pregame dinner.  I do not fault the Wranglerettes in any way shape or form.  But Chick-Fil-A dropped the ball.  They were late delivering the food.  Then ran out, and the driver with the second delivery driver got lost.  I was no where near the last one in line, and still had to eat without tasting my food.
And now, on to the game.  The final score did not reveal everything that happened during the game.
I missed the coin toss, so I don't know who won, but I do know that Friendswood received the ball at kick off.  Maetzold and our offense marched right down the field to to end zone.  After that first score, which came 2 minutes 34 seconds into the game.   Channelview called for a fair catch on the 26 yard line, and 4 plays later punted the ball.  Kennemer caught the ball on the 40.  Once again, Maetzold's offense marched to the endzone.  4 minutes and 16 seconds later Johnson found the goal line to bring the score to 0-14.  The first quarter ended with a score of Channelview 0 - Friendswood 14.
In the first 20 seconds of the second quarter, Friendswood scored twice.  The first time when Maetzold passed the ball to Battle 5 seconds into the quarter.  The second score came on an interception by Lewis who ran the ball into the blue grass.  The brought the score to Channelview 0 - Friendswood 28.  Three minutes later, Maetzold passed the ball to Battle for another Friendswood score.  New score Channelview 0 - Friendswood 35.  After this touchdown, Channelview was able to get their first 1st down of the night.  Channelview ended up having to punt again and I saw something happen that I have only seen once before in the 30+ years I've been watching high school football - the punt was blocked!  This time, Friendswood allows our back up quarterback to play, and he finds the end zone!  The extra point kick was wide left, so the score was Channelview 0 - Friendswood 41.  When our defense took the field, our back up QB played on defense.  But then, Channelview found their way onto the scoreboard.  New score, Channelview 6 - Friendswood 41.  Friendswood answers back with 17 seconds left in the half as Battle gets around the Channelview defense to score again.  To end the second half, the score was Channelview 6 - Friendswood 48.
Tonight was the annual Daddy Daughter Dance for the Wranglerettes.  It was great to see them all dancing together.  If I ever figure out how to do it, I will post the video.
Our second string, and some third string played the entire second half.  And yet, still we were able to play with Channelview.  Although I will admit that Channelviewhad an easier time.  The sophomore WR/DB known as Jordon Wood played most of the second half.  And even led the Mustangs into the end zone.  One thing our players learned on the field tonight is that if you bend the rules, the refs will see it, and the team will be punished.  The Mustangs suffered penalties for a false start, personal foul, and unnecessary roughness.  I was very disappointed in our team for the personal foul and the unnecessary roughness.  A team from Friendswood should not play that way.  At the end of the 3rd quarter, the score was Channelview was 13 - Friendswood 48.
The 4th quarter landed Friendswood penalties for face mask, false start, and off sides.  And both teams found the end zones again.  Tyler Dement also put points on the board by kicking a 41 yard field goal!  The final score was Channelview 20 - Friendswood 58.  The game ended when Wood took a knee.  Something else happening at the end of the game, which put a smile on my face, the Falcon band and the Mustang band battled back and forth playing the same song.  Who could play it better/louder.  I wonder if they're still there playing that song.
This moves Friendswood to 4-0 to finish the nondistrict games.  Next week, the Mustangs will travel to the island to take on the Galveston Ball High School Tors and open district play.  I will not be able to make this game.  Instead I will be at my high school's (Dickinson) homecoming.  I will be at the following game to watch the Mustangs take on the Pearland Dawson Eagles.
Tonight was a great opportunity for our younger, less experienced players to get some playing time and see where they need to improve.
I am looking forward to the next home game.
On a very sad night, I learned through twitter that the quarterback from West Orange -Stark (who we played 2 weeks ago),  was taken off the field on a stretcher after an apparent seizure on the sidelines in their game against Jasper.   Later in the evening, I learned the evening, I learned that the player had past away.  Here is a link to the article about this player.  http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/high-school/WO-S_quarterback_taken_off_of_field_by_stretcher.html?c=y&page=1#storytop
