Admittedly, I didn't pay as much attention to this week's game as I normally do. I had friends with me, a group of 6th grade girls talking to me, and I was watching an 8th grade boy attempt to flirt.
After losing 3 key players to injuries last week alone, I was really worried about how our defense would play. The first 18 minutes of playing time seemed to show that our defense wasn't ready. Stratford seemed to find plenty of holes to run through. But when the Spartans got into the end zone for the second time, it was their last.
I have to say, the tackling tonight was probably the best I have ever seen the Friendswood Mustangs tackle. I didn't see a single arm tackle (if one happened while I had my head turned, please don't tell me. Please let me believe that they didn't try any arm tackles). Sure, there were still a few holes, a few missed assignments, and a few lucky passes, but overall, our defense did a great job of tackling tonight.
Our offense seemed to make some adjustments during the game as well. Those "adjustments" were probably made in the locker room during half time. During the second half, our offense looked more like the Friendswood Mustangs than they did in the first half.
I think everyone knew going into this game that it wasn't going to be a walk in the park. And it wasn't. Lots of punting happened tonight. But our Mustangs showed that they can overcome adversity and continue to play well. Of course, I don't want to continue to test that theory. I think we've had plenty of "adversity" for this season. Now, we just need to get everyone healthy and back into playing pads and back on the field.
Rumor has it that next week, we'll start getting injured players back. And huge props go out to Will Fitzpatrick for playing with a knee brace tonight after last week's injury.
Next week will be our first game in the newly renovated Henry Winston Stadium We're told that the pressbox may not be ready, but the PA system and the score board will be working, they may just be controlled from somewhere other than the pressbox. I think all the fans are looking forward to getting back into our stadium.
If you see any of our coaches around town, be sure to tell them what a great job they are doing with the team.
